What a View from The Shard ticket gets you

You come in on Joiner Street, beside London Bridge station, clear security and take the lifts up to level 68. From there the ticket covers three floors: the glassed galleries on 68 and 69 and the open-air skydeck on level 72. The galleries sit 244 metres up, almost twice as high as any other viewing platform in London, and on a clear day the view runs about 40 miles, over Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and the bends of the Thames.

There is one ticket, on a timed arrival slot, and you can add a glass of Champagne or a set of digital photos when you book. Once you are up there is no time limit until closing, and the bars on 69 and 72 sell drinks and snacks. The restaurants and the hotel lower down the building are separate bookings, and a View from The Shard ticket is the viewing floors only.

About The Shard

Renzo Piano's glass spire over London Bridge

The Shard is the UK's tallest building, a tapering spire of glass that Renzo Piano set down beside London Bridge station. The panes pick up the weather, so the tower looks grey one hour and silver the next, and from the river it is the sharpest point on the skyline. Inside is a vertical city of offices, restaurants, a hotel and apartments stacked one above the other, with the public viewing gallery right at the top.

That top is the part you can buy a ticket for. From up there you look down on the Tower of London, across to the towers of the City and west along the river to the London Eye, and the open-air skydeck on level 72 is as high as a visitor can go.

Levels 68 and 69, the glassed galleries

Level 68 is where the lifts open, and the first look is the one people remember: London in every direction behind floor-to-ceiling glass. Level 69 has the bar and room to walk the whole circle, picking out landmarks as you go.

Both floors stay indoors whatever the weather does, so they are the calm half of the visit on a windy day. They come with every View from The Shard ticket.

Level 72, the open-air skydeck

One level higher, the glass opens to the sky. Level 72 is the open-air skydeck, the top of the visit, where you feel the wind and hear the city underneath while the shards of glass keep rising above you.

Bring a layer, because it is open to whatever the weather is doing. The route up is step-free from level 1, and the skydeck is on the standard ticket, not an upgrade.

Sunset and the city after dark

The official timetable prints sunset next to each day's clock, and that is the slot worth chasing. Get up there before the sun goes down and stay: with no time limit once you are in, you watch the light go and the city switch on beneath you.

Saturday runs until 10:00 p.m., the longest evening of the week. Pick a slot that still has you on the floors at dusk and one ticket gets you the day view and the night view.

Champagne and photos, added when you book

The ticket can carry two extras: a glass of Champagne and a set of four digital photos of your visit. Both are chosen when you book, not at the top.

Food and drink from outside stay out; only what the bars on 69 and 72 sell is allowed on the galleries. A proper meal means one of the restaurants lower down, booked separately. Add the extras to your View from The Shard ticket at checkout.

The Shard opening hours, address, and what to expect

When you can go up

Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Saturdays run 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and the other open days keep a shorter clock that moves with the season. Last entry is one hour before that day's close. See The Shard opening hours.

Where the ticket hall is

The entrance is on Joiner Street, London SE1 9QU, two minutes from London Bridge station. The 32 London Bridge Street frontage is the hotel and restaurants, not the viewing gallery. See how to get to The Shard.

Once you are through the door

Bags over 55 x 38 x 20 cm stay out and there is no cloakroom. After level 1 the route to the galleries is step-free, with wheelchairs available on request. Plan your visit to The Shard covers accessibility, photography and the bars.

Know before you book The Shard tickets

Arrival is timed. You can walk in up to 15 minutes after the time on your ticket; later than that may mean a rebooking fee.

Show the digital voucher on your phone at the box office to exchange it on arrival.

Everyone under 18 goes up with an adult.

Tripods, monopods and selfie sticks are not allowed. Phones and handheld cameras are fine.

A table at Aqua Shard, Oblix, Hutong or any other restaurant in the building is not on this ticket.
